    An ordinary brush with miswak powder in the bristles. It cleans like any brush, and it still needs water. No research has tested whether the miswak-infused powder does anything.

Why the miswak works without a tube or water

A miswak already contains what a tube of toothpaste is there to supply. Toothpaste does three jobs: a mild abrasive that scrapes plaque off, a burst of fluoride to harden the enamel, and something to kill bacteria. A toothbrush does none of them.

The miswak carries all three inside itself: silica, a fine natural abrasive that cleans without scratching, a small trace of natural fluoride, and compounds that kill the bacteria behind decay and gum disease.3 4 You are not going without toothpaste when you use a miswak. The miswak is the toothpaste and the brush at once. That is also why it needs no water.

Where the infused brush sits

In the middle, but much closer to the toothbrush. The powder comes from a miswak, and a plant-based brush beats plain plastic, but its powder doesn't retain the chemistry of a natural miswak and no study has shown it performs as the miswak does or even close.   • What we learned from research

    What the miswak vs toothbrush trial data actually found

    In 2022 researchers pooled nine trials. Used on its own, a miswak cleaned about as well as a toothbrush. Not better, but about the same, and it did that with no tube, no water and no power. People who used a miswak and ALSO brushed had less plaque than people who only brushed.5

    However,a miswak does have its downsides, ittakes about a week to learn, it grows mold in a few weeks if you store it damp, and it tastes sharp and earthy rather than minty. The three problems are set out on the research page.

    Why the powder loses what the miswak has

    Several brands grind miswak into powder and press it into bristles. A 2023 trial tested one against a chewing stick and a toothbrush, and plaque came down in all three groups.2 A miswak-infused toothbrush works as a toothbrush put still requires toothpaste and water. No study has shown it works as well as a stand alone miswak.


    The germ-killer in a fresh miswak is benzyl isothiocyanate.6 The miswak does not store it ready made. It keeps two harmless ingredients apart, and they only meet when you bite a fresh miswak stick. Grinding a miswak into powder making a miswak-infused brush happens months before anyone chews it, so the reaction never starts. The brush still scrubs, but the chemistry has already faded, and no research has measured what is left.

    Why we sell the miswak exactly as it grows

    A brush would sell more easily than a raw stick. We kept the whole miswak for five reasons that all point the same way: the germ-killing chemistry only forms in the fresh miswak, the whole miswak is the form every study used, it is natural with nothing synthetic, the heritage lives in the shape, and it needs no water. No water and no toothpaste, ever. Read the full case is in why we kept the whole stick.

    Selling it for nine months also showed us four things that make people quit: education, flavor, mold, and size. None of these are a problem with how it cleans, and each is something we can work on without changing the miswak. The details are on the research page.

  • Our Ongoing Research at Oxford University

    MSc Nanotechnology for Medicine and Healthcare

    We are proud to announce that we are currently conducting ongoing research at Oxford University through participation in the MSc Nanotechnology for Medicine and Healthcare program. This ongoing research focuses on advancing the Miswak stick for contemporary oral care by combating black mold and the lack a minty fresh after-feel. While still in progress, the research is being conducted under the supervision of Professor Peter Dobson OBE as the principal supervisor.

    Our work aims to bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern science by investigating how we can optimize the Miswak's natural antibacterial compounds and delivery mechanisms. This is the start of our commitment to improve the products we offer.

Does a miswak-infused toothbrush work like a miswak stick?

No study has shown that it does. It brushes, but a miswak's germ-killing compound is made only when you chew fresh tissue, and ground powder has none, so no one has measured what is left in the bristles.

Was toothpaste used in the 2023 miswak trial?

Only the standard toothbrush group used fluoride toothpaste, and the plain miswak stick used none. The paper does not say whether the infused brush used toothpaste, so its result cannot be read as the ground miswak working on its own.

Why would grinding a miswak change its chemistry?

The germ-killer is not stored in the wood. A miswak keeps two harmless ingredients apart, and they meet only when you chew a fresh tip, which ground powder no longer has.

Is a whole miswak stick actually proven to work?

Yes. Nine trials read together found a whole miswak cleans about as well as an ordinary toothbrush on its own, and better alongside brushing. That evidence is for the whole stick, not for powder in bristles.
